Strauss’ masterpiece is transcribed here in its entirety with no cuts. Scored for D (or Eb) clarinet, three Bb clarinets, and bass clarinet, this transcription presents sizeable technical challenges for all five parts and requires a secure command of the altissimo register. Originally intended to be performed on late 19th Century German instruments of the Baermann-System of Oehler-System, but playable on all forms of modern clarinet, this transcription is not for the faint of heart, but is a joy to play and listen to. If desired, a standard orchestral percussion part can be added for the ratchet, snare drum, cymbal crash, and all-important triangle. The perfect piece to conclude an April Fools Day Concert.
