Prokofiev rejected the term ‘neo-classicism” when discussing his first symphony, but there’s no denying the deference to the works of Haydn and Mozart in this 1917 composition. This transcription is scored for D clarinet (or Eb), three clarinets in A, and bass clarinet in Bb. While it was intended to be performed on early 20th Century Oehler-System clarinets such as those by Gustav Mollenhauer, these parts work equally well on modern instruments of French or German origin. All five parts require the use of the full range of the instrument and present numerous technical challenges to the performers. A lot of fun to put together!
